This project aims to further our understanding of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by exploring the cognitive processes and brain mechanisms underlying the condition. ADHD is a highly heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder that affects sensory processing, attention, memory, and impulse control in diverse ways, impacting daily life, work performance, and overall well-being.
A key goal of this study is to examine cognitive processes such as sensory perception, attention, and working memory in greater detail, while also addressing the significant variability seen in ADHD. Additionally, this research investigates the neural mechanisms that support these cognitive functions using electroencephalography (EEG), a method that measures brain activity with high precision. By analysing functional connectivity – how different regions of the brain communicate – we can identify patterns unique to individuals with ADHD. Unlike most previous research, which often focuses on group-level differences between ADHD and neurotypical individuals, we aim to explore that, as well as individual differences within the ADHD group itself.
The findings from this study could have important real-world applications. A more precise understanding of ADHD-related cognitive mechanisms and its heterogeneous nature may lead to improved diagnostic tools, targeted interventions, and personalized treatment strategies. By identifying specific neural markers of ADHD and accounting for its variability, we can work toward more effective support systems in clinical, educational, and workplace settings.
